It is never too soon for a young person to start thinking about his or her future after graduating high-school. This fall, nine youth took advantage of an opportunity offered by Union County 4-H in cooperation with the Union County Public Schools Latino Outreach Program called Beyond the Curve: Career Development Program. Designed for high-school youth to strengthen their skills in searching and applying for jobs, the youth learned valuable lessons to influence their future. Over the course of a few weeks, these high-school students learned the importance of building a resume, marketing themselves and their skills, goal setting, and more.
Throughout the program, the youth researched a career and presented their findings to a group of their family and friends. After completing a career personality assessment, the participants learned what type of career they may be best suited for and based their research on their findings. Some of the youth already had an idea of what they wanted to pursue in life and others hadn’t thought about it. Some of the careers they chose were Radiologist, Pediatrician, and Electrical Engineer. The project gave them a chance to explore the skills and personality traits needed, the salary, working conditions, and education and training required for the position. They also practiced their public speaking skills when they talked about their research to a group of people.
To conclude the program, the group also visited three different colleges including Central Piedmont Community College- Levine Campus, South Piedmont Community College, and Wingate University. They were able to participate in a tour to introduce them to the college campus environment. When reflecting on her time in the program one of the participants commented, “It motivates me a lot. I think I have made a decision now about what I can do for the rest of my life. I didn’t do a lot of research before this program.”
