Strawberries

It’s that special time of year when delicious strawberries are ripe for the picking! Amounts of berries should peak in early May and continue through the end of the month and into June. It appears to be a bumper season for strawberry production due to our warm winter weather, so plan your visit to a local pick your own, or buy them already picked at your local farmers market.

According to Dr. Ben Chapman, NC State University Food Safety specialist, eating fresh strawberries should pose no concerns due to the coronavirus

Rather, practicing social distancing while picking or shopping for strawberries is the most important recommendation to follow. You may wear gloves and mask while you pick or many farms will pick for you and you can simply drive by and pick up! Check the farm’s website or call to see if children are welcome at the pick your own site.

Being outside and picking your own fresh berries, enjoying healthy seasonal fruits, and supporting your local farmers are all great reasons to get out and participate in this once-a-year strawberry harvest! You can eat them fresh and juicy, in tantalizing desserts, or preserve this spring fruit for year-round enjoyment. Check the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Farm Fresh website for strawberry farms close to you!
