What is North Carolina 4-H Congress?

Honor Club Induction

Honor Club Induction

Congress is an event for youth ages 13 or older (as of January 1 of the current program year). The event takes place Saturday-Tuesday in July at NC State University in Raleigh. Delegates are taken to Raleigh and chaperoned by N.C. Cooperative Extension staff members and parent volunteers. On Saturday morning the state presentation competition takes place. Many members choose to travel with their families and stay in a hotel on Friday night. On Saturday evening, NC 4-H Honor Club Induction takes place.

Throughout the rest of the week, Congress has lots of activities that will entertain and develop delegates. Some of these activities include workshops, a community service project, and state officer elections. There are also two dances held at congress: a casual one, where delegates will also have the opportunity to explore campaign booths put up by state officer candidates, and a formal one that will take place as votes for state office are tallied. The new state officers are announced at the end of the dance, and a candlelight installation ceremony immediately follows.

Who can go to Congress?

Youth 13-18, as of January 1, can become eligible to attend Congress by having done one or more of the following things:

How much does Congress cost?

The approximate cost of Congress is $190, plus any additional spending money youth wish to bring. Henderson County 4-H uses endowment funds to pay for lodging in the dorms, breakfast on campus, and groceries for food the rest of the week. The $190 fee pays for registration and materials for the event. Youth may use scholarships earned in presentations or other competitions to pay for all or part of the registration fee.
