As we move through the 2025 flu season, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself, your family, and your community. Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe illness and, in some cases, serious complications.

Common Flu Symptoms
Flu symptoms often come on suddenly and may include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Sometimes vomiting or diarrhea (more common in children)

The Best Ways to Reduce Your Risk
The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older, with rare exceptions, get a flu vaccine each year. Getting a yearly flu vaccination is the best way to reduce your risk of flu and its potentially serious complications.

Additional prevention steps include:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water
  • Use hand sanitizer when handwashing isn’t available
  • Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Stay home when sick and avoid close contact with others who are ill

Support Your Immune System Naturally
Healthy lifestyle habits can help support your body’s defenses:

  • Engage in regular exercise
  • Get sunlight and fresh air when possible
  • Prioritize adequate sleep and rest
  • Increase intake of fruits, vegetables, and fluids

Key Nutrients for Immune Health
Certain vitamins and minerals play an important role in immune function. Foods rich in these include:

  • Vitamin C: oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, kiwi, bell peppers, broccoli
  • Zinc: lean meats, poultry, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains
  • Vitamin D: fatty fish (salmon, tuna), egg yolks, fortified milk and cereals

There are over-the-counter supplements that contain these nutrients, but always talk to your doctor before starting any new supplements.
