Choosing and Caring for the Perfect Christmas Tree

Picking out a Christmas tree is one of the most enjoyable traditions of the season, and a little know-how can help you bring home a tree that looks good and lasts through the holidays. Start by considering where you would like to place the tree in your home. Measure both the height and width of the space, including room for a tree stand and your tree topper. This saves you from the surprise of trimming too much off the top when you get home. When visiting a tree farm or lot, look for trees with a healthy, green color and flexible needles. Give the branch a gentle pull, only a few needles should come off. Fresh needles should also snap cleanly when bent, and the tree should have a mild, pleasant scent. If possible, choose a tree that has been displayed upright in water, as these hold their freshness longer.

Once you’ve picked the right tree, proper care at home makes all the difference in how long it lasts. Before placing it in the stand, make a fresh cut about half an inch from the bottom of the trunk. This reopens the pores so the tree can take up water again. Use a sturdy stand that holds at least a gallon of water, and fill it immediately. For the first day or two, a freshly cut tree can drink a surprising amount, so check the stand often and never let the water level fall below the cut surface. Plain water is all that’s needed. Research shows that additives like sugar, soda, aspirin, or commercial “tree preservatives” don’t improve needle retention. Just keep the stand filled, especially in the first week.

Placement inside the home also matters. Keep the tree away from heat sources such as fireplaces, heat vents, space heaters, or sunny windows, which dry the tree out faster. LED Christmas lights produce far less heat and are a safer option for live trees. With steady water and a cooler location, most trees will stay fresh for three to four weeks. When the season is over, recycle your tree through local programs or use it in the landscape as habitat for birds.

With a little attention, you can enjoy a beautiful, long-lasting Christmas tree that brings warmth to your home all season long. Whether you’re picking out a Fraser fir from a local farm or choosing a pre-cut tree in town, a good selection and simple care go a long way in keeping your holidays bright.
