The Clay County Farmers Market officially opened for its second season on Thursday, May 8, drawing in a strong turnout with its new location and time. Now held on the Hayesville Square from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., the change was made in response to challenges faced last year with afternoon heat and unpredictable summer storms. “Last year, we had issues with the weather. The heat and the afternoon summer storms made it difficult for the vendors and patrons to enjoy what the market had to offer, which is why we changed the time,” said Tyler Osborn, Agriculture Agent for Clay County.
The opening day featured 10 of the 18 vendors registered for the season, offering a variety of early-season items, including local honey, skin care products made from locally grown ingredients, handmade dog treats, vegetable and flower plants, canned goods, and early produce. This year's popular new addition included two food vendors - Breakfast Babes and Jack’s Magic Beans Coffee - allowing marketgoers to grab a bite and a fresh cup of coffee while shopping. As the season progresses, more vendors are expected to join, bringing in fresh eggs, local beef, and a wider selection of produce.
The market is a collaborative effort supported by the N.C. Cooperative Extension – Clay County Center, Clay County Government, and Babe’s Corner Store. It will continue every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on the square in downtown Hayesville.
