On August 18 at 11 AM, Master Gardener℠ Volunteers of Clay County will host Lauren Albin at Moss Memorial Library.

This lecture will touch on the science behind the phases of the Moon, the lunar landscape, and how eclipses happen. We will also discuss the seasonal names for the full moon, such as "strawberry moon," "worm moon," and "snow moon" in relation to planting and gardening. Lastly, we will take time to learn how the Moon has been utilized and valued by different cultures and communities around the world.

Lauren Albin is Director of the O. Wayne Rollins Planetarium and Instructor of Astronomy at Young Harris College. She specializes in telescopes, star lore,  mythology, and poetry. Since arriving at Young Harris College, Lauren has hosted numerous shows in the planetarium and opened the college’s observatory for YHC students, local school groups and members of the surrounding community. Lauren teaches astronomy courses like “Introduction to the Solar System” and “Beyond the Solar System” for both YHC and Young Harris Early College students. She is also a published poet and translator of Korean poetry. In her free time, she likes to read and travel.
