Collapse ▲In a significant stride towards fostering community well-being and sustainable living, the N.C. Cooperative Extension – Clay County Center proudly announces its successful acquisition of a $700 grant for the Hayesville High School Agriculture program. This grant, facilitated through the Steps to Health Program, aims to cultivate a culture of self-sufficiency by imparting knowledge on growing food and promoting a healthy lifestyle within the community.
The grant funds were utilized to procure essential equipment for the local agriculture program, led by Mr. Silas Brown. As part of the collaborative effort, Clay County Extension Director and Family & Consumer Science Agent, Kim Terrell, will maintain close engagement with the students and the project. Their collective goal is not only to instill practical farming skills but also to emphasize the importance of incorporating fresh, homegrown produce into a balanced and health-conscious diet.
Looking ahead, Mrs. Terrell is set to conduct an educational class with the students next spring, leveraging the fruits of their labor as the crops yield. This session will not only celebrate the successful cultivation but also serve as a hands-on experience, teaching participants how to adeptly prepare and cook vegetables for wholesome and nutritious meals.
The initiative underscores the commitment of N.C. Cooperative Extension – Clay County Center to empower local youth, encouraging a profound understanding of agriculture and fostering a community that embraces the benefits of cultivating one’s own food. As the gardening season approaches, the partnership between the Extension Center and the Hayesville High School Ag program holds promise for a healthier and more informed community.
