Clay County Commissioners were recently awarded the “Partnership Award” by the N.C. Cooperative Extension. County Government and Clay County Cooperative Extension maintain a strong, collaborative partnership grounded in shared goals and a mutual commitment to improving the quality of life for county residents. The County provides vital support through financial investment—which helps attract and retain highly qualified Extension staff—as well as in-kind resources, including public facilities for programs in 4-H, nutrition, agriculture, horticulture, and the Master Gardener’s Downtown Discovery Garden. A standout achievement of this partnership is the co-development of a new permanent farmers market venue with a commercial kitchen, where Extension played a key role in shaping design and programming through its seat on the planning committee. This new facility will strengthen food and nutrition education, agritourism, and small business development. Extension is also engaged in planning for a proposed multi-use agriculture and livestock arena that will host youth, educational, and community events. In addition to programming, Extension supports countywide strategic planning, grant development, and emergency preparedness. Together, Clay County Government and Extension exemplify a model partnership defined by collaboration, innovation, and a shared dedication to community well-being.
