For some home gardeners, topsoil is very scarce or nonexistent depending on where their house is located. This can make gardening or landscaping a difficult task. Most resort to constructing some kind of raised or in-ground bed filled with locally sourced topsoil or purchasing some of the many bagged soils or amendments. Some struggle with getting the combination of ingredients correct for optimum plant growth.
Last year, N.C. Cooperative Extension of Cherokee County offered a 2-3 evening workshop on constructing raised beds. This year we will offer the class again, but with a few changes. The seminar will focus on different materials to fill a raised bed and different kinds of bulk materials along with some bagged options. The seminar will be held on October 25th at 25 Riverside Cir, Hayesville, NC starting at 9:00am. We will have each of the soil amendments analyzed and the soils tested. From the data, we will show how much of each is needed for optimal plant growth for what is to be grown.
